Historical or Biographical Note

William F. Meacham received the Harvey Cushing Medal, the highest honor given by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, in 1987. A 1940 graduate of Vanderbilt Medical School in 1940, Meacham received the entirety of his surgical training at Vanderbilt. His mentor in neurosurgery at Vanderbilt was Dr. Cobb Pilcher.

Dr. Meacham joined the medical faculty at Vanderbilt and remained at the school for five decades, serving as Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery from 1954 until 1984. During his distinguished career as a neurosurgeon and educator, Dr. Meacham trained over 50 residents. In 1974, seventeen of his former residents founded the Meacham Neurological Society, a group which established a fully funded chair in the Department of Neurosurgery at Vanderbilt in honor of their esteem professor.

Dr. Meacham also taught at Meharry Medical College in Nashville and served as national president of various medical organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Southern and Tennessee Neurological Societies. Dr. Meacham passed away on January 20, 1999.
