Historical or Biographical Note

George Vernon Mann received his B.A. from Cornell University in 1939 and both his Sc.D. in Biochemistry and his M.D. from John Hopkins University in 1942 and 1945, respectively. He served as an assistant professor of nutrition from 1949-1955 at Harvard University. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1958 as associate professor of biochemistry and was appointed to associate professor of medicine there in 1968. Mann left Vanderbilt in 1987 to join the World Health Organization Center at Meharry Medical College in Nashville. He has conducted extensive research on chronic vascular disease and human nutrition and is well-known for his 10 commandments of good health, a group of lifestyle tips designed to help people maintain good health. He retired and lived near McMinville,TN until his death on July 17, 2013.
