Historical or Biographical Note

Guy Maness received his B.A. from the University of Missouri and his doctorate of medicine from Washington University in 1925. He accompanied his mentor, Dr. Barney Brooks, to Nashville when Brooks joined Vanderbilt as Chair of the Department of Surgery during the time of the medical school's reorganization. Maness then served his internship and residency at Vanderbilt, completing the latter in 1929.

In 1933 he was appointed Chair of the Division of Otolaryngology, specializing in endoscopy. Maness personally performed the great majority of all diagnostic and surgical peroral endoscopies as well as all laryngeal surgery in Nashville until the end of World War II. His hard work resulted in his election as a Fellow of the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society.

Maness served as Chair of the Division of Otolaryngology until May 1964, when he retired and became Clinical Professor of Otolaryngology, Emeritus.
