Historical or Biographical Note

William McCabe graduated from the medical department of Vanderbilt University in 1903. He became Superintendent and surgeon of the Nashville City Hospital in 1909. He resigned from that post to serve as a member of the Vanderbilt hospital unit that deployed for military service in France. As a physician and surgeon, McCabe performed the first suture of the heart ever performed in Nashville as well as the first successful tranfusion of blood in the city. the first pulmotor and the first automobile ambulance used in Nashville were put into service by Dr. McCabe. McCabe also served on the Vanderbilt clinical faculty as associate clinical professor of general surgery from 1925 to 1933.
