Historical or Biographical Note

Mary S. Rose (1874-1941) was a nutritionist, teacher, author, and researcher. She wrote two classic texts, Feeding the Family and  Foundations of Nutrition. Her research interests included: basal metabolism, iron, Vitamin C, Vitamin B, and cereals and bran.

Rose received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1909 and became the first full-time faculty in nutrition and dietetics at the Teacher's College of Columbia University, from 1909-1941. Rose also served as Deputy Director of the Bureau of Food Conservation of the Federal Food Board from 1917-1918. She was a member of the Council of Foods of the American Medical Association from 1933-1940 and the League of Nations, Technical Commission on Nutrition from 1935-1937. Rose was president of the American Institute of Nutrition from 1937-1938.
