Historical or Biographical Note

E. Hugh Luckey was born in Jackson, Tennessee, and graduated from Union University. He received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 1944. Luckey served in the Army Air Force from 1949 to 1948, and on his return, he was appointed director of the Cornell Medical Division at Bellevue Hospital.

Luckey began his career at Cornell University Medical college as an assistant in medicine. He was a Niles Fellow in medicine, doing research on abnormal blood protein. He then served as Dean of the Medical college from 1954-1957, and from 1957-1966, Luckey was Chair of the Department of Medicine. During this period, he and his associates established one of the first coronary care units in a university hospital. He was promoted to President of the Medical Center in 1966 and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1977.
