Historical or Biographical Note

Albert Brant 'Pinky' Lipscomb was an outstanding member of the Vanderbilt Commodore basketball team from 1939-1941 and was named to the all-Southeastern Conference tournament team for two seasons. He was the high scorer for the entire tournament in both 1939 and 1941. Additionally, Lipscomb was a member of the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1947, after becoming an orthopaedic surgeon, Lipscomb became team doctor for the Commodores, and he served in this capacity until 1990. Throughout his career, Lipscomb also attended to the athletic injuries of numerous athletes at Tennessee State University and many high school athletes through Middle Tennessee. He is credited by many in college athletics as being a pioneer in making sports medicine a widely accepted specialty.

In 1993, Lipscomb was appointed clinical professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, emeritus, at Vanderbilt. He passed away in 1996.
