Historical or Biographical Note

James A. Kirtley Jr., M.D., graduated from Vanderbilt in 1931 and conducted a residency at Vanderbilt University Hospital from 1931-1935. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery, serving in that capacity from 1947-1968. Kirtley was president of the Middle Tennessee Heart Association from 1951-1952 and was active in the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, having been a member of its board of governance. He had also served as Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at Baptist Hospital in Nashville, attending surgeon at Veterans Administration Hospital, and as lecturer at Meharry Medical College.
