Historical or Biographical Note

William P. Jacocks was educated at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He also received a degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University. Jacocks worked for the Rockefeller Foundation for many years as a physician and executive, mainly in India and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), becoming a world authority on nutrition, bubonic plague, and hookworm. He left the Rockefeller Foundation in the early 1940s to direct nutrition work with the North Carolina Board of Health. Jacocks retired around 1950 and received an honorary doctorate degree from the University of North Carolina.
