Historical or Biographical Note

The family of the late E. Bronson Ingram pledged $300 million to Vandebilt University in 1998 through an Ingram Charitable Fund to support programs in teaching, biomedical research and education, public service, and athletics. The family also pledged $56 million to the Vanderbilt Cancer Center in 1999. In conjunction with the gift, the Vanderbilt Cancer Center was renamed the E. Bronson Ingram Cancer Center at Vanderbilt in memory of Ingram and in recognition of his and his family's unwavering support of Vanderbilt, particularly its internationally-known cancer research programs. Ingram's wife, Martha R. Ingram, succeeded her husband as the chair of Ingram Industries and has served on the Vanderbilt Board of Trust. Their son, Orrin H. Ingram II, chair of Ingram Barge Co. and alumnus of Vanderbilt, became actively involved with the Vanderbilt Cancer Center's Board of Overseers upon his father's death and lead a campaign to nearly double his family's gift to the Vanderbilt Cancer Center.
