Historical or Biographical Note

Frank Hollowell, M.D., fought in the Civil War as a private in Col. McNairy's battalion of cavalry. He remained with McNairy until taken prisoner and sent to Camp Chase. After months of imprisonment, he was exchanged. Hollowell then joined Forrest's regiment, where he became captain of cavalry and served as such until the end of the war.

Hollowell matriculated at the University of Nashville in 1867 and graduated in 1869. He practiced in the Edgefield neighborhood of Nashville. In 1882, he took charge of the Medical College Hospital, and he served in this capacity until 1886.
