Historical or Biographical Note

Loren H. Hoffman earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1968. He joined the Vanderbilt University Medical Center faculty in 1969 as an instructor in the Department of Anatomy, which later became the Department of Cell Biology. As a Professor of Cell Biology, Hoffman's major responsibility was overseeing the Medical School courses in his field. A favorite among students, he won the 1977 Shovel Award from Vanderbilt students as best lecturer. Hoffman served on the Vanderbilt faculty for three decades before his passing in 1999.
