Historical or Biographical Note

Sydney Harshman earned his B.S. in biology and chemistry from Western Reserve University in 1950 and his Sc.D. in biochemistry from Johns Hopkins University in 1959. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1959 as Instructor in the Department of Microbiology and rose to the rank of Professor by 1978. Harshman was Associate Dean of the Graduate School from 1976 to 1981, and he was appointed Professor Emeritus in 1996. The world's leading expert on staphylococcal alpha toxins, Harshman passed away in 1998.
