Historical or Biographical Note

William Groce Harrison received an academic degree from Auburn University and medical degrees from the University of Nashville and the University of Maryland. After his marriage in 1896, Harrison kept a general medical practive in Talladega, Alabama. He decided to change his field to Ophthalmology, and after a year of advanced training in Vienna, he moved to Birmingham. He served as a lecturer on the history of medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for a decade, commuting from Birmingham each week in order to do so. Harrison also worked as the medical examiner for the Protective Life Insurance Company and was a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
