Historical or Biographical Note

Walter Eugene Garrey, M.D., Ph.D., was born in Reedsville, Wisconsin, in 1874. He earned his B.S. from Lawrence College in 1894 and his Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Chicago in 1900. He later earned his M.D. from Rush Medical College in 1909. Dr. Garrey taught at Cooper Medical College in San Francisco, Washington University, and Tulane University before he was asked by G. Canby Robinson to chair the Department of Physiology at the reorganized medical school at Vanderbilt in 1925. He served in that capacity until becoming Professor Emeritus of Physiology in 1944. He continued to conduct research at Vanderbilt until his death in 1951.
