Historical or Biographical Note

Samuel M. Fleming was born in 1908 in Franklin, Tennessee. He graduated from Battle Ground Academy in 1924 and Vanderbilt University in 1928. After college he worked in New York then returned to Nashville to work at Third National Bank in 1931. He became president by 1950 and served in this capacity until his retirement in 1970.

Fleming was elected to the Board of Trust of Vanderbilt University in 1952. He became Chairman of the Board in 1975 and served in this position until 1981, when he retired from the Board. Fleming was chairman at the time of the Vanderbilt merger with George Peabody College for Teachers in 1979 and played an important role in bringing the two institutions together. He was also instrumental in the Owen Graduate School of Management in 1969 and for the creation of the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt in 1981.
