Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. William R. Cate practiced medicine in Nashville from 1926 until his passing in 1973. A native of Kentucky, he received his M.D. degree in 1920 from Emory University School of Medicine. Cate served as a hospital administrator in Korea for two years and was appointed professor of medicine and chief of hospital medical staff at Severance Union Medical College in Seoul, Korea.

Upon his return to the United States in 1926, Cate established his practice in internal medicine, later specializing in cardiology. In addition to serving as professor emeritus of clinical medicine, Cate was instrumental in establishing the heart clinic at Vanderbilt University Hospital.
