Historical or Biographical Note

Born in 1891 in Alabama, Oliver C. Carmichael earned his B.A. and M.A. at the University of Alabama and his B.Sc. and Diploma in Anthropology in 1917 as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Dr. Carmichael was a specialist in languages, with a knowledge of Greek, Latin, and seven modern languages.

After World War I service, public school teaching, and nine years as President of Alabama College, he came to Vanderbilt. He became a Dean at Vanderbilt in 1935, Vice-Chancellor in 1936, and Chancellor in July 1937, serving in the latter post until 1946.
