Historical or Biographical Note

A native of Nashville, Tennessee, Dr. Bishop took his medical degree at Vanderbilt University in 1914 and his M.P.H. at Johns Hopkins University in 1923. He joined the staff of the Tennessee State Health Department in 1916 and rose to the status of Commissioner by 1924. Dr. Bishop resigned this post in 1935 to become Director of the Health and Safety Department of the Tennessee Valley Authority, a position he held until the time of his death. In 1950, Eugene Lindsay Bishop was given the Lasker Award for "original and meritorious accomplishments in public health administration." During the late 1930's. TVA had 42,000 men at work on construction projects. Dr. Bishop directed sanitation, hygiene, and health care for this large labor force. One of Dr. Bishop's greatest challenges at TVA was controlling malaria. The 10,000 mile shore line of TVA's lakes offered the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dr. Bisop came up with the brilliant idea of raising and lowering the water level in the reservoirs to control mosquitoes. Dr. Bishop's method of preventing the hatching of mosquitoes resulted in an "extraordinary reduction of Malaria" in the state of Tennessee.
