Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. John Clinton Foshee (1892-1976) was a surgeon, professor and Vanderbilt alumnus. He was a pioneer in many types of surgery. He demonstrated that the fascia, if removed for use elsewhere in the body, regenerates in six months. He was a loyal supporter of Vanderbilt Medical School and contributed a large endowment to the Department of Surgery.

He received his MD from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1916. He began a long career at the Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan in 1916 as an intern, eventually becoming a surgeon and instructor. He worked at the Butterworth Hospital until 1967. He was also part of the Army Medical Corps from 1916-1918, and he was part of the Visiting Surgeons' Club at the Mayo Clinic from 1918-1919.
