Historical or Biographical Note

Sidney P. Colowick (1916-1985) was a biochemist, microbiologist, Vanderbilt professor, and editor. He is principally known for his work on the hexokinase enzyme and the regulations on hexose transport in cultured animal cells. He also studied the conversion of glucose to polysaccharides, NADH, and NADP.

Dr. Colowick received his Ph.D. from the Washington University School of Medicine in 1942. He then worked his way from Instructor to Assistant Professor of Pharmacology at Washington University School of Medicine from 1942-1946. Then he left Washington University to become a Research Associate at the Public Health Research Institute of the City of New York from 1946-1948. Then he worked as Associate Professor of Biochemistry, at the University of Illinois from 1948-1950. Then he started as an Associate Professor and eventually became a Professor of Biology at Johns Hopkins University from 1950-1959. Dr. Colowick left Johns Hopkins and became the American Cancer Society -- Charles Hayden Foundation Professor of Microbiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, a position he held from 1959-1985. He was also editor of the hand book series Methods of Enzymology from 1955-1985. Dr. Colowick was the recipient of Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry (1947), a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1969), and a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1972).
