Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Marcus Chesley Key was born in Kossuth, Alcorn County, Mississippi on March 12, 1876, the son of Christopher Columbus Key and Martha Caroline Morrison. He received his medical degree from the Memphis Hospital Medical College in 1905. He married Flora Lillian Hamm of Ramer, McNairy County, Tennessee on June 4, 1905. They were the parents of four children, Clarice, Allene, Merle Elizabeth and Frances Willard Key. Dr. Key lived on a farm in Ramer where he maintained a large garden and raised chickens, pigs and cows. A proverbial country doctor, Dr. Key practiced medicine throughout McNairy County and Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi for over forty years. He treated patients, delivered babies and performed minor surgeries in his home, as well making his rounds on horseback or train. He died on April 9, 1970 in Ramer, and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery near Corinth, Alcorn County, Mississippi.
