Historical or Biographical Note

Benjamin Franklin Byrd III was born in 1950. He received his B.A. from Princeton University and his M.D. from Vanderbilt University. He became an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1984 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology in 1991. As of 2010, he is Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute. Byrd has also served as Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory. His namesakes, father and grandfather B.F. Byrd Jr. and B.F. Byrd Sr., respectively, were renowned Nashville physicians.
