Historical or Biographical Note

Robert Norman Buchanan Jr., M.D., is a dermatologist who received both his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Vanderbilt University. A native of Sumner County, Tennessee, Buchanan is the grandson of John Price Buchanan, who was Governor of Tennessee from 1891 to 1893. His father was physician Robert Norman Buchanan Sr.

Buchanan, Jr. began his dermatology practice in Nashville in 1941 and joined the Army Medical Corps in 1942. He was a member of the Vanderbilt unit of the 300th General Hospital. By the end of World War II, Dr. Buchanan had attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was Chief of Dermatology for the Mediterranean Theater for U.S. Forces.

He returned to his medical practice in 1945, where he continued until his retirement in 1996. He joined the Vanderbilt University medical faculty in 1941 and served as Clinical Professor of Dermatology from 1955 until he was awarded emeritus status in 1976.
