Historical or Biographical Note

Dorothy L. Brown, M.D., was a native of New York. A surgeon, she took courses at Cornell University and later moved to Nashville to attend Meharry Medical College, from which she graduated in 1948. As of August 1965, Brown was the only African-American female surgeon in Nashville, and she one of three in the nation who were members of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Brown was also the first African-American woman elected to the Tennessee General Assembly. Dr. Brown died in 2004.
