Historical or Biographical Note

Leslie McClure Smith received the MD degree from Vanderbilt University in 1930. He was born in Bourbon County, KY, and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky. A talented musician, he played the trumpet in dance bands, and was a member of the UK Band. He wrote the music to the song "On, on U of K." After graduation from medical school, Dr. Smith joined the US Public Health Service and worked in Ft. Stanton, New Mexico. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater. Dr. Smith served 23 years in the Public Health Service. Later, he taught at Tulane University and practiced in the fields of EENT and Ophthalmology. Dr. Smith retired in 1969 and spent part of his retirement days in Truth or Consequences, NM.
