Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. James Whitaker West was born December 15, 1878 in Bullock County, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama receiving a B.S. degree in 1901. Later that year he enrolled as a student in both the Pharmacy Department and the Medical Department of Vanderbilt University. He received his M.D. degree in 1905. He practiced for a time in Montgomery, Alabama for a time before moving to Live Oak, Florida in 1908 where practiced medicine for the remainder of his career. In 1912, he married Leila Moore, and had four children. Following an extended period of poor health, he died in Live Oak July 9, 1941. His son, John Thomas West also a physician, and Vanderbilt School of Medicine graduate, established a medical scholarship trust in his memory.
