Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Donald L. Thurston was born in 1910 in Hamburg, Germany. He spent much of his childhood in St. Louis, MO, before attending and receiving his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Vanderbilt in 1934 and 1937. He received his postgraduate training in pediatrics and pathology at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY and Boston Children's Hospital. Following service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Dr. Thurston returned to St. Louis in 1946 and joined the pediatric faculty of Washington University School of Medicine, where he served in a number of roles for 40 years.
