Historical or Biographical Note

George Weeks Hale was born in Maine in 1847. He was from a distinguished New England family and was a grand-nephew of Nathan Hale. He received his education at Bowdoin College, receiving the B.S. and M.D. degrees from this institution. He completed several residencies in New York city hospitals and practiced in Maine until the the 1880s, when he spent a number of years abroad. In 1898 he decided to move to Nashville and joined the ENT practice of Dr. Marvin Cullom. In 1902 he married Miss Virginia McHenry of Nashville, who died in 1960. Through her estate she established a Professorship of Ophthalmology at Vanderbilt in memory of her husband.
